My name is Hugh, but in Barcelona I’m called Hugo.
I’m an American who made a permanent life in Barcelona and now help visitors, newcomers, and future residents navigate the city with realistic expectations, local context, and practical guidance.
Barcelona is an extraordinary place, but understanding how it actually works — socially, culturally, and day to day — makes all the difference.

Understanding Barcelona
Barcelona can be exhilarating, disorienting, inspiring, frustrating, and deeply rewarding — sometimes all in the same week — or the same day! Understanding the city means more than knowing where to go. It means learning its rhythms, expectations, culture, and contradictions.
Maybe you’re planning your first visit and want to experience Barcelona beyond the usual tourist version of the city — to understand the neighborhoods, the food culture, the pace of daily life, and what makes this place feel so different from elsewhere. Before I moved here, I was first a visitor just like you.
Or perhaps you fell in love with Barcelona during a visit and are beginning to imagine a more permanent life here. Moving abroad involves much more than paperwork and apartment searches. It helps to understand how the city actually functions day to day and whether its lifestyle truly fits your expectations and priorities. I made that journey myself after gradually realizing I wanted to build a life here with my family.
And maybe you’ve already arrived and are feeling slightly overwhelmed by the practical and cultural adjustment. Finding housing, navigating bureaucracy, building routines, and understanding how things work here can take time. I still remember the bewilderment of those first weeks: “Okay… now what?” Having trusted local guidance can make the transition feel far less isolating.
Sometimes the difference between struggling through Barcelona and truly settling into it comes down to having the right perspective and support along the way.

Wherever I’ve lived, I’ve been passionate about building community and immersing myself in local culture.
Within my first year of living in Barcelona, a local cocktail bar in my neighborhood of Vila de Gràcia created a drink called the Don Hugo — a rum-based Old Fashioned that still occasionally follows me around the neighborhood.
(If you’re curious, you’ll find it at NOLA Cocktail Bar & Food.)
Over the years, I’ve built friendships and networks across many corners of life in Barcelona. I’m often the person friends call when they want recommendations, perspective, or help understanding how the city really works — from neighborhoods and restaurants to daily life, local culture, and practical realities.
That combination of local knowledge, lived experience, and community connection is what I hope to share through HUGOENBCN.
